On the occasion of the commemoration day of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, this article (“Holocaust commemoration on Instagram and Co”) deals with the digital transformation of Holocaust remembrance. It draws on the work of Tobias Ebbrecht-Hartmann on social media memory and the function of digital platforms such as Facebook or Instagram as connective memory spaces. The article also presents Ulrike Weckel’s work on images of liberation in feature films and Ulrike Koppermann’s study of the iconic photo album produced by SS-photographers at the Auschwitz II concentration camp in 1944. Moreover, it introduces the goals of the VHH project and highlights its innovative aspects, which – according to the author – exemplify the potential of digitization for the humanities at large.
