New technological developments in the field of 360° photography, virtual and augmented reality offer the possibility of expanding physical space by means of digital media and mobile devices. The results are virtual experiential spaces that connect on the one hand to the historical places and the memorials situated there, and are on the other hand able to augment those places through digital technologies that address different senses. This essay analyses how digital technology turns memorials into augmented places.
